Understanding the choices that should be considered when selecting and setting up a manual wheelchair to achieve optimal performance for an individual is important. Participants will be given an opportunity to propel wheelchairs with different configurations and weight distributions to experience the differences.
Differences in performance between mid-wheel and rear-wheel drive power wheelchairs will be reviewed. The role of suspension and stability in minimizing client fatigue will be discussed. Participants will be given an opportunity to drive power wheelchairs through an obstacle course to feel the differences.
This workshop looks at the clinical rationale for generic cushion choices along the continuum of seating. Understand how material and product design facilitate pressure redistribution. Participants will be given an opportunity to work with various materials to build a cushion based on the concepts discussed.
Dynamic Title Wheelchair
This session will describe the effect of the mechanism of tilt on maneuverability and independent mobility. How to adjust a tilt wheelchair to align the centre of gravity with the centre of rotation will be presented. Research findings on the use of tilt for pressure redistribution will be discussed. Participants will be given an opportunity to trial tilt wheelchairs that demonstrate the concepts presented.
Various specialty control options will be reviewed. Some programming of specialty controls will be discussed to illustrate the importance of programming for function. Various specialty controls will be available for trial during the seminar.
This is an experiential workshop. After receiving some instruction on rules of the game and features of sports wheelchairs, have some fun with wheelchair basketball. Also try a hand cycle and see how far you can go!
